Selavu sambar is usually served with Idly and Dosa. It is one of the sambar variety made in my grandma's home.
Ingredients :
To saute : Preparation Time :- 30 min
Tomato - 4
Onions - 1 cup Serves : 4 people
Mustard seeds - 1/2 Tsp
Urad dal - 1/2 Tsp
Coriander leaves
Turmeric - Pinch
Oil
Salt
For Masala :
Coconut - 2 Tbsp
Fried gram - 1 Tbsp
To Fry :
Coriander seeds - 2 Tbsp
Cumin Seeds - 1/4 Tsp
Cinnamon - 1/2 inch size
Cloves - 4
Garlic - 3 pods
Red Chilly - 4
Curry Leaves - Few
Small Onions - 4
Bengal gram (Kadalai Paruppu) - 1/2 Tsp
Fennel seeds - 1/4 Tsp
Add 1 Tsp oil & fry the above ingredients.

Add 1 Tsp oil & fry the above ingredients.
Method :
Place a pan in the stove and add 1 Tbsp oil . Add tomatoes and fry until the outer skin gets well cooked.
Grind the tomatoes, coconut & channa dal with the fried ingredients in a mixer grinder.
Heat 2 Tbsp oil to a pan, add mustard seeds & urad, add onions, curry leaves & saute it for a while.
Once the onion is fried well, add grinded masala to it. Add enough water with the masala. Add salt & tumeric powder.
Let it boil for 10 minutes until masala smell reduces. Close the pan with a lid and let it boil. Dont let it thicken.
Transfer it to a bowl.
Selavu Sambar is ready. Serve with hot idly's.
